In a study focusing on the effects of social media usage among teenagers, researchers found a correlation between high levels of social media engagement and increased feelings of loneliness. The study determined that 70% of the teenagers who reported spending more than 3 hours daily on social media platforms expressed feeling isolated, while only 30% of those who used social media for less than an hour had similar feelings. Furthermore, the researchers noted that teenagers using social media predominantly for passive activities, such as scrolling through images and videos, often reported lower satisfaction with their social interactions.
This led the researchers to suggest that social media can contribute to feelings of loneliness when used excessively and primarily for non-interactive purposes.
