Finding Length of a Side in Triangle Using Law of Cosines

Medium Geometry And Measurement Triangles

Triangle XYZ has two sides measuring 7 cm and 10 cm. The angle opposite the shorter side (7 cm) is 30 degrees. What is the length of the third side, XY, using the Law of Cosines?

To apply the Law of Cosines, we use the formula: $$c^2 = a^2 + b^2 - 2ab imes ext{cos}(C)$$, where $a$ and $b$ are the lengths of the two sides, $C$ is the angle between those sides, and $c$ is the length of the side opposite angle $C$.
