Understanding Democracy

Throughout history, the notion of democracy has been interpreted and implemented in diverse ways across cultures. Initially derived from the Greek term 'demokratia', which means 'rule by the people', democracy encompasses a system of government whereby power resides in the citizens, who exercise it directly or through elected representatives. In the modern era, democracy has taken on various forms, including direct democracy, representative democracy, and participatory democracy, each with unique characteristics and operational methods.

Some countries emphasize civil liberties and political rights, contributing to what is known as liberal democracy. Others may adopt a more restrictive form of governance that includes limitations on speech or assembly, often justifying them in the interest of national security or social order. Understanding these distinctions is crucial for interpreting how democracy manifests in contemporary society.
