Understanding Earth's Layers

Medium Reading Comprehension Factual Information

The planet Earth is divided into several layers, each with distinct characteristics. The outer layer, known as the crust, is composed of solid rock and constitutes the land and ocean floors. Below the crust is the mantle, a semi-solid layer that flows slowly over time and is responsible for tectonic activity. Deeper still is the outer core, which is liquid and composed primarily of iron and nickel. Finally, at the center of the Earth lies the inner core, a solid ball also made primarily of iron and nickel, but under immense pressure due to the weight of the layers above it. This intricate structure plays a critical role in geological processes.
