Understanding Interdependence in Ecosystems

Clara was preparing for her school’s annual science fair. She had always loved experimenting with different materials and observing the results. This year, she decided to create a model ecosystem using a glass terrarium. She spent weeks gathering plants, soil, and small rocks, carefully considering how each element would impact the others.

On the day of the fair, Clara proudly presented her terrarium. She explained to the judges how the plants and soil worked together to create a sustainable environment for tiny insects she had introduced. After her presentation, one of the judges asked, “What will happen if you remove one of the plants?” Clara smiled and responded, “If I take out the fern, it might disrupt the balance of moisture in the terrarium, which could harm the insects.” The judges nodded, impressed by her understanding of ecological relationships.
