Understanding the Advisor's Purpose

Medium Pragmatic Understanding Purpose Of Speech

Listen to the following conversation between a student and a university advisor.

Student: Hi there! I'm really concerned about my coursework for next semester. I've been hearing that some classes are really tough, and I want to make sure I manage my schedule well.

Advisor: That's a great concern to have! Planning your classes is crucial. Can you tell me which subjects you're thinking about taking?

Student: Sure! I was thinking of registering for Advanced Biology, Statistics, and maybe Creative Writing, but I’m worried about balancing them.

Advisor: That sounds like a solid mix. Advanced Biology can be demanding, especially with lab work, while Statistics will involve a lot of numbers. Creative Writing is a lighter load, but it still requires time and effort. Have you thought about how many credits you want to take?

Student: I want to keep it around 15 credits, but I’m worried if I can handle the workload. What do you recommend?

Advisor: I suggest you consider starting with 12 credits and perhaps adding a summer course for the Advanced Biology lab if it fits your interest. This way, you can adjust as you go!

Note: This question has been adapted from its original format to accommodate a reading-based version. In the official TOEFL exam, speaking and listening sections require verbal responses and audio prompts, which are not represented here. Please note that this adaptation may not fully reflect the nature or difficulty of the official exam. The audio feature for these sections will be available soon.
