Understanding Tone and Attitude in a Counseling Session

Very Hard Pragmatic Understanding Tone And Attitude

Listen to the following conversation between a student and a university career counselor:

Student: I was really hoping you could help me sort out my plans for the upcoming job fair. I’ve researched a few companies, but I can’t shake off this feeling that I’m not quite ready. I think I came across as too anxious last time.

Counselor: Absolutely! It’s perfectly normal to feel anxious, but let me tell you, preparation can make all the difference. You’ve put in a lot of effort into your research, so have confidence in yourself.

Student: Thank you! But how do I convey that confidence during my conversations with potential employers?

Counselor: Focus on your strengths, and remember to smile. Your enthusiasm for the roles you’re interested in will speak volumes. Employers are looking for potential, not just polished experience. If you show enthusiasm and curiosity, they'll appreciate it.

Student: That’s good to hear! I was worried about sounding inexperienced. Should I mention my past internships more, or should I focus on my academic achievements?

Counselor: Mentioning both could work well! But if I were you, I’d highlight your internships first because real-world experience can often resonate more with employers. They appreciate practical knowledge. Just present it in a way that shows your eagerness to continue learning.

Note: This question has been adapted from its original format to accommodate a reading-based version. In the official TOEFL exam, speaking and listening sections require verbal responses and audio prompts, which are not represented here. Please note that this adaptation may not fully reflect the nature or difficulty of the official exam. The audio feature for these sections will be available soon.
