Understanding Tone and Attitude in Conference Discussion

Hard Pragmatic Understanding Tone And Attitude

Listening Passage:

Speaker 1: You know, I really thought attending that conference would inspire me, but it turned out to be quite underwhelming. I expected engaging discussions, but most of the talks were so repetitive—they didn’t really add anything new!

Speaker 2: I get what you mean. I felt the same way when I attended last year. It feels like they recycle the same speakers every time.

Speaker 1: Exactly! And while the keynote speaker had great credentials, I noticed she didn't even elaborate on her main points. It left me questioning the importance of the topic.

Speaker 2: That’s frustrating. I think they place too much emphasis on bringing in big names rather than focusing on the quality of the content. There's value in fresh perspectives too!

Speaker 1: For sure. Maybe next year, I’ll just rely on the notes my colleagues take instead of attending. I’d rather spend my time on something more meaningful.

Speaker 2: Sounds like a plan. It's all about making the most of our time and learning experience, right?

Note: This question has been adapted from its original format to accommodate a reading-based version. In the official TOEFL exam, speaking and listening sections require verbal responses and audio prompts, which are not represented here.
