The concept of environmental determinism posits that the physical environment, particularly the climate and terrain, shapes human behaviors, cultures, and societal structures. For instance, proponents argue that civilizations in temperate climates, with access to arable land and abundant natural resources, tend to develop more advanced technologies and political systems compared to those in harsher climates, constrained by environmental limitations.

Critics assert that attributing societal success solely to geography overlooks the influence of trade, migration, and cultural exchange.
